1 While laying SW pipes, keep their sockets facing the direction of flow i.e. while moving along the flow, every pipe should begin with its socket. Always provide a concrete bed below every joint of these pipes. Provide tarred hemp in every socket around the spigot of other pipe coming into it before sealing the joint with cement mortar.
2 Choose heavy CI gully traps of sufficient depth to allow easy flow of water from floor traps to them and its further discharge without any overflow of Gully traps. See that depth of gully trap is not less than 12 inch and its weight should be equal to or more than the specified 7.26 kg. Check that each gully trap is provided with a 6 inchX6 inch sized grating. Always provide a 4” thick concrete bed to each gully trap. Also provide a 1foot X 1foot masonry chamber for each gully trap covered with an equal sized CI cover. After jointing the floor traps to the gully trap and gully trap to the Inspection chamber, prefer to fill up the space between the trap and the chamber with lean concrete to firmly hold the GT in position.
3 While laying the sewerage pipeline in the courtyard, note that wherever there is a change in direction of pipeline, an Inspection Chamber (IC) should be provided at the point of change. Similarly, an IC should be provided at every point of change in slope of pipeline. Only an IC can accommodate these changes effectively.
4 IC and Manhole covers can either be of Cast Iron or of tough plastic. CI covers of 455X455 mm size clear opening weigh 38 kg with frame and 23 kg without frame. CI covers of 610X610 mm size clear opening weigh 55 kg with frame and 37 kg without frame. PVC covers weigh less, cost lesser and are more in use these days. Build masonry chambers for ICs and MHs in rich mortar, not leaner than 1:3. Provide plaster both on inside and outside faces of masonry chambers of ICs and MHs.
5 Plan provision of WCs, Bidet, Wash Basins, shower or shower cubicle, bath tub and storage cabinets inside a bathroom in such a manner that the running length of water supply pipes is minimum. Ideal will be to keep WC, Wash basin and shower along one wall but many times, it is practically not possible. Next, try to use adjacent walls. Prefer shower-washbasin-seat arrangement instead of the standard shower-seat-wash basin arrangement. And always give priority to utility over beauty. Very costly and fancy fittings are now available but real joy lies in effective use of fittings rather than their beautiful look.
6 Keep care of space around every sanitary provision for its convenient use. An English WC will require a space of at least 800mmX800mm or 700 mm in front and 200 mm on each side. A wash basin requires minimum 200 mm elbow space on either side and 700 mm in front of it. Similarly a minimum space of 750mmX750MM should be available below a shower.
7 A small sized bathroom demands more application of mind for arranging the fittings for their best use. In small bathrooms, omit the cistern and try flush valve directly connected to tank instead of flushing cistern to save space. Provide maximum fittings as cantilevers. These will leave more of floor area open giving a spacious look. Keep even the WC as cantilever, corbelling out of the wall. Never put a counter wash basin along the long wall. For example, in a bathroom of 8’X4’ size, put counter wash basin along shorter wall. Putting it along long wall will leave no space in front of it to stand up. Fix it as a cantilever, leaving the space below it open to eye to avoid the feeling of a congested bathroom. At the most, get fixed a few drawers on one side below the counter.
8 Use the space above the WC, wash basin and bath tub (if provided) for fixing cabinets and chromium plated steel shelves. Convert the backside of the bathroom door into a 6 inch deep cupboard. Nightwear hanging behind the door looks ugly. Sometimes, it gets wet also. Conceal it by providing this shallow and lightweight cupboard behind the door. Provide sliding shutters of laminated or sunmica clad plywood or of acrylic sheet. Don’t use glass. If this cupboard is to be created, see that the door is fixed by leaving at least 9” space from the corner so that it may open fully and cupboard doesn’t obstruct its opening. It is always preferable to have a cupboard in bathroom for keeping under clothes and towels as it helps in saving time in the morning.

Happy building!

Tip of the Moment

The joints between the top horizontal member of frame and the two side verticals are called dovetail joints. There is no horizontal member at the bottom in the frames for doors.
